DescriptionThe Church Acre initiative is a great collaboration between the Friends of Childwall Woods and Fields with All Saints Church here in Childwall. Both groups are great environment advocates. The work has been earnestly supported by Childwall Abbey School Sixth Formers who have hands on helped with the construction, litter picking and planting. Putting an unused field adjacent to the church yard to good use the project has: Cleared half an acre of overgrowth leaving corridors in place for our wildlife to access the remaining two thirds of unused and deliberately kept wild land. Built an apiary enclosure ready for up to ten bee hives - to enable honey production and Bee Keeper training. With the help of Grow - Speke an edible copse of native fruit trees and planted myriad other native trees has been installed. Built raised beds (7m x 1.5m) with more to be installed. Planning a composting facility using food waste from local households, all of the leaves from the church yard, green arisings from the land and all of the excess veggie goodness we expect to get from the growing beds. The site hadnt been used for many years and before that it was used for horses - good soil therefore! This is a wonderful project that will benefit our community for years to come.
