| Description | Gartmore’s village shop and post office is a long established part of this small rural community which nestles at the foot of heather-clad hills in the Trossachs National Park in Stirlingshire, Scotland. Popular with visitors, this beautiful area includes Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle amongst its many attractions and has a wide range of tourist accommodation. The Gartmore Shop provides a valuable service to villagers and visitors alike offering everything you would expect to find in a village shop, from daily essentials to post office services. We also provide a platform for local craftspeople to sell their wares and locally we have become a recognised wine and whisky emporium as an outlet for premium vintners, WoodWinters of Bridge of Allan. Things could have been very different when in 1997 the village learned that its only shop was about to close. It felt as if we were losing the very heart of the village. Where else would we stop for a chat, catch up with village news or be able to buy that forgotten pint of milk. Not to be outdone, Gartmore did what it does best and rallied to the cause. Three months later and after a lot of hard work, late nights, public meetings and questionnaires Gartmore Community Shop was formed. Villagers were invited to buy shares and this was match funded by Leader II Rural Stirling Initiative. We were also supported by The Co-operative in setting up our own community co-operative. On 8th January 1998, Gartmore Shop opened its doors under community ownership, staffed by a willing team of local people and managed by a voluntary committee. Still at the forefront of village life, Gartmore Shop continues to serve its customers in the village and outlying areas. We welcome new shareholders at any time and if you would like to support Gartmore Shop by purchasing some shares priced at just £1 each, please contact us. |
